A spreadsheet works right up until it doesn't. Here's exactly where it breaks down as a collection grows — and what to actually look for instead.

Every collection starts on a spreadsheet

There's no shame in it — a spreadsheet is free, familiar, and completely adequate for two or three animals. Name, morph, weight, last fed. Done. The question isn't whether to start there. It's knowing the point where it stops being the right tool, because that point arrives quieter than people expect.

Where it actually breaks down

Genetics stops being a lookup and becomes a math problem. Two or three animals, you can hold the het combinations in your head. Fifteen animals across overlapping projects, and predicting a pairing's outcome by hand — especially anything involving allelic complexes — turns into the kind of arithmetic that's easy to get subtly wrong in a way that only shows up months later, in the egg.

A spreadsheet has no concept of "in progress." A pairing isn't one data point — it's a sequence: introduced, locked, ovulated, pre-lay shed, laid, incubating, hatched. Modeling that in rows and columns means either a wall of manually updated status cells or losing the timeline entirely.

Photos and history don't live anywhere sensible. A "photo" column with a folder path is the first thing that breaks the moment a laptop gets replaced or a folder gets renamed.
